Cotton and Polyester consists of three layers;

- The outermost cell wall which is composed of the cuticle and keratin. The cuticle is a thin layer of waxes and pectins containing cellulose, and keratin which is designed to maintain a stable body temperature.
- The secondary wall has several concentric layers of microfibrils and scaly covering which periodically change their angular orientation with respect to the fibre axis to push off dirt.
- The synthetic material is treated to form semi-crystalline fibres to handle abrasion and resists liquid droplets which hold its shape, drape, and rigidity.
